What "Visible Loss" Means

"Visible" depends on three things:

  • Viewing distance/medium: Screen (96 DPI) vs print (300 DPI) vs billboard (15 DPI).
  • Content type: Text edges vs photo detail vs flat color.
  • Viewer acuity: Most people can't distinguish 150 DPI from 300 DPI on a monitor at normal viewing distance.

Our Moderate level targets 150 DPI — the "invisible loss" sweet spot for screen and acceptable print. High targets 72 DPI — visible on print, okay for thumbnails/email previews.

How to Compress Safely

Choose Moderate Compression

  • Subsets fonts (only used glyphs)
  • Strips metadata, thumbnails, duplicates

Compare Before/After

300 DPI Print Rule

Commercial printing requires 300 DPI at final size. If your PDF goes to a print shop:

  • Use Low compression (lossless only)
  • Or don't compress — keep original
  • Verify: open in Acrobat → Output Preview → check image resolutions

Exception: If your source images are already 300 DPI at print size, Moderate (150 DPI) will downsample them — quality loss. Check first.

96–150 DPI Screen Rule

Monitors: 96–120 DPI typical. Retina/4K: 200+ DPI but scaled. 150 DPI PDF renders perfectly on all screens. 300 DPI wastes bandwidth and storage. For email, web, Slack, Teams, internal review: Moderate (150 DPI) is the sweet spot.

When Quality Loss Is Invisible

Photos

JPEG at q=75 vs q=95: indistinguishable to human eye at normal viewing. The 8×8 DCT blocks only appear under extreme zoom or heavy recompression chains. Moderate level uses q=75 — safe.

Text

Text in PDFs is vector (glyph outlines). Compression doesn't touch vectors — only images. Text stays mathematically perfect at any zoom. Font subsetting removes unused glyphs, not used ones.

Line Art / Diagrams

If stored as vectors: untouched. If stored as images (screenshots of diagrams): downsampling 300→150 DPI on line art can blur thin lines. Fix: keep as vector, or use PNG (lossless) via PDF to JPG (PNG output) → JPG to PDF.

When to Compress Differently

Re-Encode via PDF→JPG→PDF

When Moderate isn't enough but High loses too much quality:

  1. PDF to JPG at 200 DPI (custom DPI setting)
  2. JPG to PDF with "Auto" page size
  3. Result: fresh rasterization at exact target DPI, no double-JPEG artifacts

This is cleaner than recompressing already-compressed JPEGs.

Split Instead of Compress

A 200 MB, 500-page scan won't compress below ~50 MB without destroying quality. Better: Split PDF into 10 × 50-page files (~5 MB each). Email one at a time. Or Extract PDF Pages for just the needed section.

Remove, Don't Compress
