When to use JPG

Transparency note

PDF pages have a white background by default. PNG output with transparency makes that background transparent — useful for overlaying the page on colored backgrounds in design tools. JPG cannot do transparency (white background baked in).

How to Keep Quality High

DPI / quality settings

DPI (dots per inch) determines how many pixels per inch of PDF page. A standard US Letter page (8.5×11 in):

• 72 DPI → 612×792 px (≈0.5 MP) — thumbnail quality
• 150 DPI → 1275×1650 px (≈2.1 MP) — web/email quality
• 300 DPI → 2550×3300 px (≈8.4 MP) — print quality
• 600 DPI → 5100×6600 px (≈33.6 MP) — prepress/archival

Higher DPI = more detail, larger files. For screen: 150 DPI is the sweet spot. For print: 300 DPI minimum.

300 DPI print rule

Commercial printing requires 300 DPI at final size. If your PDF page is A4 (210×297mm) and you need it printed at that size, 300 DPI output gives the printer exactly what they need. Don't upscale a 72 DPI image to 300 DPI — you'll just get blurry pixels. Start with the right DPI.

Vector vs raster content

PDFs often mix vector (text, shapes, logos) and raster (photos). Our rasterizer renders vectors at the target DPI — so text stays sharp at any DPI. Photos are limited by their embedded resolution. A 72 DPI photo in a PDF won't gain detail at 300 DPI output — but the text around it will be crisp.

Convert Only Some Pages

Don't need all 200 pages? The page range field accepts:

• 3-7 — pages 3 through 7
• 1, 5, 10 — specific pages
• 1-10, 15, 20-25 — mixed ranges
• last — last page only
• odd / even — odd or even pages

This saves time and disk space — only rasterize what you need.

If output looks blurry: (1) Increase DPI setting, (2) Check if source PDF has low-res embedded images (zoom in 400% in viewer — if it's blurry there, no output setting fixes it), (3) Use PNG instead of JPG for text/diagrams (JPG artifacts blur edges).

300 DPI PNG of a 50-page PDF = huge ZIP. Options: (1) Lower DPI to 150, (2) Use JPG instead of PNG, (3) Convert only needed pages, (4) Compress the resulting images with an image optimizer.

Password-protected PDF

If the PDF has an open password, you can't open it to convert. If it has an owner password (permissions), you can't extract images. Use Unlock PDF first (if you know the password).
